Fourth grade students at Weatherbee School have been reading nonfiction and researching extreme weather. Students learned to use text features and structures to help them find and take notes as part of a research team. Using Lucy Calkins reading curriculum as a teaching resource, teachers guided students to share their learning by writing presentations to teach themselves and others.
On Friday, February 26th, students welcomed, Todd Simcox, channel 5 meteorologist, to share his knowledge and expertise in the area of weather and forecasting. Students were able to learn about the training, tools and responsibilities of a meteorologist. Students were able to ask prepared questions about their weather topic to help enhance their research.
As a celebration of our learning, computer teacher, Sue Oberholtzer, assisted in recording students presentations about their weather events using a “green screen” similar to the technology Todd Simcox shared he uses during broadcasting. Students had the opportunity to add images of their event to the iMovie program that brought their presentations to life.
